Why do we have to die? Do we spend our life in preparation of Death? What was the plan for the Son of God and Death? Are we afraid of it?

Where does the idea of death come from? Possibly, from Gensis, where Adam and Eve fall from grace caused by the snake or from the Death of Abel.

As we grow up from a child, we experience death all around us. Our frog or dog dies. Our elders die and sometimes, our parents or peers die. Someone tells us that they have gone to heaven and try to explain the cycle of life and death. The past week, many dead leaves have already started to fall from the trees as part of Natures life, death and rebirth cycle.

It may be hard for the child to understand all this. The smell of flowers may become associated with Death from the funeral or memorial flowers. Some children will not understand why their loved ones are put into the Earth.

Somewhere later in the child’s life, an understanding grows.

In many Christian churches, we learn the Bible stories including the Christmas story of Jesus Christ birth and then in Easter, just a few months later, the story and pagent of the death and resurrection of Jesus. How Jesus goes to prepare a place for us. We are taught to set our goals high, to live the commandments, to live a righteous life, to be baptized so we can enter Heaven when we die. Sometimes we fall, yet God helps us up and with Grace, forgives us of our errors.

Part of our life is lived in fear. This is in part what the Bible stories of the Hebrews in the Old Testament teach. There is another side of fear it is of respect for a higher being. The respect we give to our Father and Heavenly Father.

Many people fear judgment day when they die. They have the image of going before God as a judge and possibly sent to Hell. I’m reminded of a funny movie with Albert Brooks and Meryl Steep called: “Defending your Life”. Have you seen it. There are many books that describe what happens when we die. We were required to read numerous texts in our ministerial studies. One of my favorite was “Through the Gates of Death”.

If you have taken God, or Jesus or the Holy Spirit into your heart, have been baptized and have found salvation, you no longer fear death. You know you are a child of God. You have the gift of eternal life. This is the promise of Christianity.

You aren’t waiting and fearing. You have God, Jesus and the Holy Spirit walking with you and watching over you. You have access to all God’s abundance and Grace in your life. “God blesses you all the days of your life and you will live in the house of the Lord forever”, as David tells us in the 23rd Psalm.

You know that Death is not an ending of everything. It is just the ending of this physical body which can only last so long. It is a relief to let go of the old failing body and to return home. It is the beginning of a new journey with God.

After speaking in DC last week, Sherry and I went to visit the woman who sold me our sailboat at Sibley Hospital. She had just delivered her first child, a little girl named Stella Mira – Star of the Sea in Italian. Stella and the birth of all children give us new hope of life to unfold. Have you ever noticed how them seem to glow with Spirit? They have just come from God and still have God’s presence within them unspoiled by the Earthly journey. What a joy they are.

Conclusion:
In closing, do you have an endgame or exit strategy? Are you prepared to return home?

Maybe over the next few weeks, you can pray and meditate on your own death. Are there things you want to do? Is there some forgiving needed? Is there some sharing or giving you want? How prepared are you? Are you working on your destiny, your life’s plan?

Take some time too to pray and commune with God, Jesus and the Holy Spirit. You will be lifted up and filled with joy and Love.

Celebrate every day of life, as it is a gift from God to you and those you love.

God bless youRev. We live in a time when the Word of God has spread throughout the earth. A time when the Holy Spirit lives within us and brings us closer to God. A time when God provides our every need.

For millions, these are the worst of times. Millions have lost their job and for many – who they are. They thought that what they did was who they are and now when they lost it, they are the lost. They feel terrible pain. They feel whipped by conditions beyond their control. Their lives are a tangled mess. Many who feel the pain, turn to God, the Son and the Holy Spirit. They return to God. Others will continue to feel the pain and for some, it will get even worse.
God provides for our every need, even when we don’t understand that it is what we need. Maybe the loss of our job or our home is just what we need.

The bible is full of stories where the oil in the lamps that normally would burn out – continued to burn, or the story of the fish and loaves of bread that fed the multitudes. God meets our every need.

Sometimes we don’t see both sides of an issue until we go through it. Last Sunday, Sherry and I met with healers in Columbia and Baltimore. We saw a movie called the "Living Matrix" which was about all the research going on with non-medical healing works. In the movie, a woman had a cancerous tumor. Some of us have had tumors too. After the fear, the woman began to embrace the fear, the illness and as she surrendered to the treatment, the tumor disappeared. Her life had changed with this tumor. She realized what was important in life. She even thanked the tumor for helping her turn her life around to a much richer life. God works in strange ways. He supplies our every need.

This past week, one of my teachers made her transition. She was diagnosed with cancer in May. It was so aggressive that she only had months and days before she left us. This teacher was only 58. One child had graduated from college and the other is half way through. She went on Sabbatical last year after 27 years of service. I believe she earned her wings and will be helping us from heaven. Sometimes we don’t understand how someone passing meets our needs. For her though, a tumor had cause internal cranial bleeding and a stroke. She could no longer speak and was in so much pain, she was on morphine her last days. God met her needs by bringing her back home, relieving of her pain and body. I know she is in the company of angels now.

Many people are now asking God for help and the Holy Spirit to guide them. Sometimes they get an idea and don’t know where it came from (That’s the way the Holy Spirit works).

In 1990, a woman got an idea for a book. That same year, her mother died from MS. This affected her writing. She was diagnosed with clinical depression and even contemplated suicide. At one time, she was also on welfare. She followed the guidance and today she is one of the most successful authors of all time and an inspiration to generations. We know her as J.K. Rowling and her books about Harry Potter based on her own life.

We never know when the Holy Spirit gives us a nudge or idea. We just have to be open to God and Spirit working in our life. Is there a book or idea that you have been given, a gift to explore, a passion to follow? Let God and the Holy Spirit be your guide and find that your needs are met, by letting Spirit work through you.

In conclusion: Over the coming weeks.
- Remember that there are two sides to a coin and even a dark cloud has a silver lining on the other side.
- Follow the words of Jesus as given to us by Matthew in chapter 7:
- Remember today’s scripture, read it, contemplate on it and pray on it.
- God meets our every need. Open your eyes to God’s work in your life.
God bless you.Rev. I truly believe that when one door closes, another is opened. That was an amazing summer many years ago.

Another gate is the one of summer. If the gate is closed, it may be time for other activities: We look at Summer as a time to relax and get some rest. It is a time to recreate our mind and bodies by doing things opposite of what we do for work. It is a time of creativity. As a child, we may go to camp. As an adult, we may go on a long cruise or take a trip to visit with Family. This is as it should be. Did not God teach us to rest on the 7th day? Even God takes a little break from time to time. I always feel that God and the Holy Spirit are with me. I know they are with you too. Summer brings us great happiness with our vacations and relaxing times.

Another gate is the gate of hard work: We all work so hard during the year. Sometimes the harder we work, the slower it goes. I talked to a young man yesterday who is a mechanic. He said that he struggled putting an engine in a car for over 4 hours. After reaching a level of frustration, he decided to quit and leave it for the next day. The next morning, he installed the engine in 30 minutes. The rest removed the blockages.

Summer and light are also gates to wisdom: It is also a time of longer days and more light. More time to find the wisdom.

Rest and recreation can help us to find the wisdom we seek. Vacations are a great time to meditate or visit spiritual places. Just as the young man found the wisdom to do his work, we too find inspiration and knowledge when we include rest in our life. Not only rest, but reading the bible, prayer and meditation also bring wonderful mental and spiritual restoration to us. Even camping and reading by candle light can be a great joy.

Here in our area, summer brings us hurricanes and some violent weather. It’s wise to have some candles ready when the power goes out. It’s also a time when we can go out with our love and family for a romantic candle light dinner. As I look at our new light fixtures, I see candles. Although they are electric, the candles bring us not only light but also a connection with past times. Even the candles on the altar bring additional light into our Chapel as in the light of God.

<span style=";font-family:";" >In conclusion:

<span style=";font-family:";" >Lift up your heads, O you gates; be lifted up, you ancient doors, that the King of glory may come in”, the Psalmist David tells us. When one door closes, another is opened. Look for it. Allow the Divine to work through you and within you.

<span style=";font-family:";" >Summer is a wonderful time to have some recreation and re-creation. Open the gates of your hearts and let God work through you too. You will be renewed.

<span style=";font-family:";" >Remember that God created play as well as work. You deserve it too.

<span style=";font-family:";" >God blesses you.
Rev. Actually, the video portion are beautiful pictures from a slide show, rather than my pug. The audio is not word for word what is shown below. It is as Spirit inspires me to speak what has been given. This morning let's call upon God for assurance. It would seem that the world is spinning out of control. We are faced with surprises everyday that also seem to knock us off balance. What can we do to survive and thrive? How can our faith help us?

Several weeks ago, we talked about the "The Will of God". I hope you spent some time giving it some thought. Romans 12:2 tells us:

Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God's will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.

Every year, God's cosmic will is shown in the cycles of the seasons. We have just gone through the Autumnal Equinox last Monday. Summer is over and we are now in Autumn. The Earth is beginning a transformation of great beauty. As in heaven, so on Earth.

With all the changes going on in this world, it can be unsettling. The Psalmist tells us another way to go through life: "The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want, He makes me lie down in green pastures, He leads me by quiet waters, He restores my soul. He guides me in the paths of righteousness for His name's sake. Even though I walk through the valley of death, I fear no evil, for you are with me. Thy rod and Thy staff, they comfort me. You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies. You anoint my head with oil, my cup overflows. Surely goodness and love, will follow me all the days of my life and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.

When we have the Lord as our Shepherd, we are protected and we receive guidance. The shepherd looks after the flock. There is an assurance both in this prayer and in the attitude to have. Follow the guidance given, especially in changing times.

The world seems to be spinning out of balance. It seems as if every day, there is more to unbalance us in our life: There have been fears of shortages of food, such as rice. There appears lines at gas stations as there where 22 years ago. Fears of lack of adequate fuel to maintain our daily activities. There are other shocks too, such as the Chinese placing a vehicle in orbit and their first space walks. While in our country, there appears to be a near meltdown in our financial system. Who would have thought that our banking industry would be subject to failure? Washington Mutual, one of the largest banks had a run on it that withdrew over 16 billion dollars causing it to fail, then being purchased. What has driven the prices of food and fuel up? Fear.

The world is full of shocks that shake us awake from the sleep of the cocoon we have been living in. These changes remind me of the humble little butterfly and the transformation they go through in their life. With the warm temperatures of summer, we have been blessed to see these little creatures of God as they have transformed from the larval caterpillar stage, an inactive pupal stage, and a spectacular metamorphosis into a familiar and colourful winged adult form. When we accept Christ and God as our shepherd and guide, we too go through a spectacular transformation. We awaken from our sleep, we are transformed by the Holy Spirit to a beautiful being with like the beautiful butterfly with gossamer wings.

As our transformation by accepting Christ, we turn to our Father in prayer. We look for his light to guide us. Prayer becomes a larger part of our life. We commune with God and follow the still small voice that speaks to us. Our shepherd is the Christ teaching us to follow in Jesus path, to walk in his footsteps. Our life is changed forever. We can't go back once awakened. When we draw the light of Christ into our daily life, the spinning world is less of concern. We are more grounded and not upset by the changes that are occurring in the outer world. Our inner world is more peaceful and content. I shall not be in want. I am as the 23rd Psalm speaks with my cup running over. What are yours?

You may feel like everything is spinning you in circles: For example, you think you have planned for retirement adequately, then the price of food and other products we use and buy from the food stores goes up 400% or more. You have to rethink retirement including income and expenses.

Or maybe you bought a boat or motor home, intending to spend quality time in the outdoors and then the price of fuel goes out of sight. No he hasn't. Being a Spiritual person, you will pray.

One form of prayer is meditation and what better way than taking a walk, as the song says, "He walks with me and talks with me". Here is where the labyrinth comes in.

The labyrinth is not a maze. It has one path that circles to the center and then circles back out. It is a symbolic pilgrimage, a journey to the Divine. It becomes a mirror for where we are in our lives. It touches the sorrows and releases our joys. Walk it with an open heart and mind.

We are told that there are three (3) stages of the walk: first, as you enter, Purgation - release and let go of the details of your life, the cares and concerns that keep you distracted and stressed. Second, as you reach the center, Illumination comes. Stay as long as you like. This is a place for clarity and insight. Receive what the Divine has for you. The third stage is Union - as you begin the path outward. Bring back to the world a renewed vision and refreshed spirit.

The renewed vision is a big WOW. Seeing the big picture can help us to regain our perspective. This can bring us calm and peace when we know where we are. Have faith and not fear, call to Christ and he will lift you up.

What can happen while in the center? It can center and align you with the Divine. Open to the increase of Divine energy into your being. Connect to the Source of all energy. By having let go of your cares and concerns, you can create the gap to be filled with Divine. The gap creates space for change to happen, the change of Illumination. Allow God's love fill you and bring you that 'Illumination'. Open to God's abundance and be renewed.

What can come out of this journey? The awesome power of 'Wisdom'. I like Wikipedia's definition of wisdom: "Wisdom is having gained knowledge, understanding, experience, discretion and intuitive understanding, along with a capacity to apply these qualities well". Wisdom is a quality of the Divine.

Wikipedia also says that "in Eastern Orthodoxy, wisdom is understood as the Divine Logos who became incarnate as Jesus Christ". I bet you didn't expect to find Christ as part of this journey, did you?

When we let go of our sorrows and the details, God can work with us and empower us with wisdom.

I have a friend who would work her heart out while debugging computer problems until she hit a wall. Then she would get up and go for a walk. She used these principles: letting go of the problem, regaining her center and perspective. When she returned, she was refreshed and almost always broke through the wall that had blocked her. She brought the insight and wisdom back with her and applied them to her work.

Why did I call this God's Labyrinth? Isn't our life a journey back to God? Yes. Do we go around in circles? Yes, we do. Do we find wisdom and bring Christ into our heart? Yes. Isn't God the creator of all? Yes. Makes sense to me.

Where do we find these labyrinths? My first labyrinth walk was on Sparrow Hawk Mountain, then Bon Secours in Marriottsville, then one in a field near Hendersonville. The last journey was in Chartres. There is also one nearby at Maryland Hall. There are ads for both Grads and Dads. It's that time of year when we think of honoring our fathers.

When I say fathers, I mean to say all fathers everywhere on Earth and in Heaven.

Let us put some thought towards the upcoming Father's Day and see what Spirit has for us, what Father teaches, expects and wants of us.

When I think of the word 'Father', I think of the prayer I learned as a child that begins with 'Our Father in Heaven'. Truly, God is our Father, the Father of all mankind and of all faiths or none. David said in the psalms, "From whence does my strength come" as he prayed to the Father. David also spoke in the favorite 23rd Psalm, 'my cup runneth over', recognizing that all God's power, strength, courage, creativity and benevolence fills my cup and runs over. Jesus also spoke of the cup when he was at Gethsemane. Three times he prayed about the cup that his Heavenly Father had given him. He also said, "not my will, but Thy Will be done". Knowing that Father knows best.

You may remember or have heard of an old radio and TV show called "Father knows best" with Robert Young. This was a rosy portrayal of the family, in the 50s and 60s where Father was the ruler or so he thought. TV provides fictitious characters and roles of fathers, but it helps us to remember the best of Dad.

How do you see Father? Maybe you see Dad as the protector, the provider, having courage, strength and integrity. "As in heaven, so on Earth". These attributes are of our Divine Father. There are so many things our fathers give us. Even when they don't give us what we want, may be the best thing for us.

Fathers always have expectations for us and wants for us to do the best and have the best. Sometimes what we think is best is not. They often challenge us and lift us up. There are times when we are asked to trust God and give up what we have for something that we even don't know the benefit or outcome. Jesus at Gethesemene, spoke of the trust that was expected of him when he prayed and said "My Father, if it is not possible for this cup to be taken away, unless I drink it, may your will be done" (Matthew 26 42). Transformation and a legacy of thousands of years were the gifts from taking the cup of Spirit and drinking. Our earthly fathers have given us gifts as well. Be thankful and gracious as your father has been.

Celebrate and honor your Father, on Earth and in Heaven. You have taken from the cup given you. Think of ways this week to celebrate Father's Day with your Father. If he is in Spirit with our Heavenly Father, give him your prayers for thanks and gratitude. Pass on the blessings your have received and lift others up as you have been lifted up.

You are loved and blessed.

Rev. Kenneth Foor, a community resident who fills the pulpit on the second Sunday. "But when we have a special occasion, like Christmas or Easter, we have a full house."

A turnout of 50 or so would fill the neat rows of pews that line both sides of the center aisle. One of these special events was the dedication of the new stained-glass windows in May, when the church was packed.

The windows, a gift from the residents, were the final piece of a major restoration that was done in 1999 and 2000. Everything was renewed and freshened with the exception of the Gothic-style glass windows at the front of the chapel, behind the pulpit.

"The original windows were opaque like those along the sides," said the Rev. Foor. "They were replaced with clear glass that looked out on to the surrounding trees. But members thought they would like to see a stained-glass window there."

The chapel committee sent out a notice for donations, as it had for the renovations and for the chapel construction itself, and residents opened their pocket books to finance the $10,000 project. The design agreed on was Christ as the Good Shepherd, and the assignment was given to the Art Glass Studio of Ellicott City.

"The people here are so wonderful - we put out a sign for contributions and people go by and give us the money we need," said Jeanette Mudd, treasurer of the Epping Forest Chapel Committee.

"Everyone who sees the window loves it," said the Rev. Foor. "It's comforting, inspirational and assuring. Christ holding the lamb is representative of all of us."

The chapel owes its existence to Harry Spencer, a resident in the 1940s who was plagued by arthritis, sometimes so crippled that he was forced to use a crutch, according to Florence Mulhern, who wrote a small booklet, "The Chapel in the Forest," describing its history.

Although Mr. Spencer lived in Epping Forest for only 10 years, he "had an unshakable belief in God and in his community's need for a place to worship," according to Ms. Mulhern. "He wanted the chapel to be a replica of the chapel in Epping Forest, England, which he attended as a boy, and with that memory to guide him, he drew up two plans for the Board of Directors to consider, one simple, one more elaborate. The simpler plan was chosen."

Mr. Spencer donated two lots for the chapel and set about not only building the structure but also raising money. Another resident contributed two lots, which were raffled off with tickets costing $1 apiece. The effort raised $600. The chapel's cornerstone was laid in 1951. Mr. Spencer died in 1955.

After its initial success as a community place of worship, the little chapel became neglected in the later years of the century when the summer residents, who at one time made up the majority of the homeowners, started staying year-round and joined churches elsewhere. However, it has become a choice location for christenings, weddings and memorial services.

"Attending services here feels like home," said the Rev. Foor, a resident for 23 years and ordained pastor of the Institute of Spiritual Development in Washington.

He shares the monthly pulpit with the Rev. James Mitchell of Heritage Harbour, a retired pastor who preaches on the fourth Sunday.

The Epping Forest community bordering the Severn River was founded in 1926 with the first sale of lots. It was strictly a summer community until after World War II when many residents began living in the hilly, forested community full-time.

Published 09/09/06, Copyright © 2007 The Capital, Annapolis, Md.Rev. He is also an active Minister, Teacher, Chair of the Wellness & Healing Committee and Treasurer of the Board of Directors at the Institute for Spiritual Development in Washington, D.C. Rev. Ken began serving the Epping Forest Chapel in 2004 as a substitute minister and became pastor in October 2005.

EDUCATION: Graduated from Beall High School in Frostburg, Md.
and has a bachelor’s degree in Business and Accounting from the University of Maryland. Ken was ordained in 2002 from the Institute of Spiritual Development, a non-denomination church. He also studied at Sancta Sophia Seminary.

BACKGROUND: Born in western Maryland, he’s married to Rev. Sherry Foor. Ken was Chaplain of his high school class and has also served as Chaplain for other organizations. He has been the CIO and Director of Information Technology (IT) at the District of Columbia Courts until his retirement in 2006. He has performed numerous Civil Marriage ceremonies while working for the District of Columbia. In the Air Force, Ken served as a policeman in the K-9 unit. Ken’s primary career has been in the computer field where he programmed and developed computer systems. He has been a project manager, technical manager and head of several IT departments. Ken has always been interested in God’s gift of healing. He has become certified in eight different healing techniques as well as pastoral and spiritual counseling. Ken also served as President and Treasurer for the Board of Directors of Epping Forest, Inc.

BIGGEST CHALLENGE: Reducing my private CPA and consulting practice to make time for ministerial studies and preparing for a new career as a full time pastor.

LONG RANGE GOAL: To establish a Spiritual Healing Center and bring Spirit into as many people’s lives as possible by counseling, teaching and performing marriages, christening and memorial services.

LIKES MOST ABOUT THE JOB: Presenting uplifting and inspirational homilies, singing beautiful gospel music and seeing the magic of Spirit working in people’s lives.

LEAST LIKE: Having too few attend Sunday service.

WHY CHOSE CAREER: He was baptized and raised in a Southern Baptist Church where he was a student minister. He lost interest in religion after leaving home to enter the Air Force, college and building a career. After attending classes and services at the Institute for Spiritual Development, he felt like he had returned home and wanted to serve God. He met many retired people who were serving as active ministers and teachers. His mentor, Rev. Jane Grey who was ordained at the age of 79, inspired him and demonstrated that one is never too old to serve God.

FAVORITE SCRIPTURE: Matthew 7 7-8: “Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives; he who seeks finds; and to him who knocks, the door will be opened”. This is an example of God’s promise and key to all God’s wonder and wisdom.

HOBBIES: Sailing, fishing, reading and learning new healing modalities.Rev. Ken Foorhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02273180807231899474noreply@blogger.com91tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1310258396350880384.post-76118120327227217972007-07-05T21:11:00.000-07:002007-08-08T20:49:08.088-07:00Chapel History From the Epping Forest News, March 1958 and updated in 2000:In the summer of 1950 ground was donated by Mr. H. H. Spencer for a site for a on-denominational church. A request was made for contributions and for volunteer help when construction was to begin. Work was started on November 6, 1950 with the felling of sixteen trees, the trees themselves paying the operator for the work. Grading was begun on November 24 and the following August 19th the cornerstone was laid. Mr. Spencer, at that time in his 80's, almost single handedly built this monument, with assistance on weekends from Mr. Angle and Mr. Irwin.

When funds became low, Mr. Cohill chanced off two turkeys and realized $213.25; Mary Spencer, Jean Rhodes, Ave Harrison and Peg Cohill held a Rummage Sale which resulted in a total collection of $82.60. Mr. Crampton contributed the hardware; Mrs. Simmons gave a large Bible; Miss Price donated two lots which were raffled off.

On July 12, 1953, the first service was held with about 50 people in attendance. Through the efforts of Doris Knackstedt, an electric organ was obtained and Mr. Nickerson and Charlie Fitzgerald graded and seeded the Chapel lawn. Mr. Goodman installed the oak slab walk which has since been replaced. The first wedding was on July 3, 1954 when Lois Thomas was married.

In 1954, the building was still very rough and unfinished inside, and the outside was drab - without paint or shrubbery. Since that time, electric ceiling lights have been installed, interior painted, floor carpeted, outside finished with stucco and concrete steps and walk added. The inside trim, including screens for the windows have been completed, the work having been done by Williams Bros., Inc., the contractor who erected the new addition to the Clubhouse, and the plastering of the inside walls by Mr. Howard D. Zook of Epping Forest, all of which have immeasurably improved the appearance of the Chapel. At that time, the Chapel Committee's next goal was to secure pews to replace the temporary benches that were in use since the Chapel opened. Pews were obtained and are still in use today.

In the summer of 1999, the Chapel asked the community for donations to make improvements to the Chapel. In April of 2000, the Chapel was rededicated after improvements were made to the interior and exterior of the building. Because of the kind generosity of many Foresters, the dry wall ceiling was replaced with a cedar one, air conditioning was installed, and both the interior and exterior walls were refurbished and repainted. An outside light was installed and a Chapel sign was erected. The community should be indeed be proud of its Chapel, its zealous and hardworking Chapel Committee, and finally the fellow Foresters who have given so generously of their time and money to the successful completion of this spiritual monument.Rev.
